General Motors Corp. has selected a supercomputing infrastructure based on IBM Corp.'s pSeries 690 servers to support the company's vehicle design applications. The IBM eServer p690 is based on IBM's POWER4 microprocessor, a SoC containing two 1GHz-plus processors, a high-bandwidth system switch, and a memory cache and I/O.

Using the IBM p690, researchers can gather data without setting up as many physical tests. The IBM infrastructure will run sophisticated crash simulations, providing safety for information. It will also run software that performs a variety of analyses to test the vehicle's structure.

The infrastructure is expected to increase GMC's supercomputing capabilities, helping the company further improve vehicle development processes. GMC will deploy the IBM p690 systems at its facilities in Michigan, Germany, and Sweden.
