China-based Huawei Technologies, a supplier of telecom network equipment, will develop its next-generation VDSL access system based on Infineon Technologies' standards-compliant Packet over VDSL chipset.

This platform is expected to enable Huawei to provide its customers with a scalable broadband access solution that uses cost-effective Ethernet transport technology to support video-based services such as video-on-demand, interactive TV receiver, and multiplayer gaming simultaneously with Internet access and voice services. Huawei and Infineon have recently established a joint laboratory for R&D, enabling the two companies to share their knowledge and promote the development of next-generation broadband access technologies.

"The PoVDSL chipset provides Ethernet over VDSL capabilities at distances of up to 1.5Km, 15 times the distance of traditional LANs. It gives system designers such as Huawei the right set of tools for developing feature-rich platforms that meet the market demand for broadband access solutions." said Thomas Seifert, SVP and GM of the Wireline Communicatons business group at Infineon.
