China Mobile, China's largest wireless carrier, will deploy Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) networks to connect Hangzhou with 11 regional cities and within the metropolitan region of Shanghai. Nortel Networks Inc.'s OpTera Metro platforms and Passport 8600 routing switches will serve as the core hardware nodes of the system.

Nortel announced the contract award a day after it revealed a contract with Chunghwa Telecom involving its OpTera 1600 DWDM and OpTera DX optical switch, and another with China's Ministry of Communication for the Succession softswitch. As Nortel's North American business contracts further, warranting additional layoffs, the bulk of the company's newer optical and softswitch contract awards is shifting to Asian markets.

Four RPR topologies are being implemented over SDH rings in the China Mobile network to allow Ethernet-based frames to carry high-availability and fault-tolerant traffic for applications such as SAN and disaster recovery. The Passport routing switches will be used to aggregate traffic from multiple customer sites, and to extend Ethernet frames from RPR rings to customer premises.
