WLAN processor reduces power consumption by 10x

Texas Instruments has introduced the TNETW1100B WLAN processor, designed to provide 802.11b connectivity with up to a ten-fold reduction in standby mode power consumption than competing chipsets for notebook PCs, PDAs, and cellphones.

Featuring an integrated 802.11b MAC and baseband processor, the device has a 12-by-12mm footprint and is designed to specifically meet the low power and tight space requirements of emerging embedded and portable WLAN market, while also improving power savings for traditional NIC and PC card applications.

The device features Extra Low Power technology, allowing the processor to consume <2mW during standby. An 802.11b-enabled PDA based on the TNETW1100B is claimed by the company to exhibit 25 percent more battery life over competitive solutions, while a laptop running typical office applications with a TNETW1100B-based PC Card or miniPCI will use up to 75 percent less energy than competitive solutions.

The processor also offers an 802.11b Complementary Code Keying operation that provides up to 30 percent throughput improvement at greater distances. It also supports the optional 22Mbps data rate of TI's PBCC modulation.

Apart from the 12-by-12mm package, the TNETW1100B also comes in a 16-by-16mm package that is pin-for-pin compatible with TI's previous ACX100 device. It also supports a variety of host interfaces including CardBus, PCI, miniPCI, and CompactFlash to make it embeddable into mobile devices and WLAN access points.
