Broadcom Corp. has announced the availability of the NetXtreme BCM5705 and BCM5705M, believed to be the industry's lowest-power GbE controllers designed specifically for use in desktop and mobile PCs, respectively.

Both 32-bit PCI controllers consume 900mW - nearly 40 percent less than 10/100 solutions and nearly 50 percent less than competing Gigabit solutions. They also offer 10/100/1000Base-T full- and half-duplex MACs, support for serial EEPROM and Flash, and JTAG support.

In addition, BCM5705M features sophisticated system-management logic that senses the performance requirements of the mobile PC, and automatically reduces power levels.

The BCM5705 and BCM5705M are both layout- and software-compatible with the BCM5702 and serve as drop-in enhancements for their popular predecessor.

Packaged in 15-by-15mm, 196-pin package, the BCM5705 and BCM5705M are priced at $19 in sample quantities.
