Oak PWM integrates frequency synthesizer functionality

Oak Technology Inc. has announced the availability of the PM-1100 pulse width modulator (PWM) that integrates a frequency synthesizer to provide enhanced precision sizing and placement of individual pixels in a laser-generated image.

"The PM-1100 enables Oak to uniquely provide our OEM customers with an advanced ASIC that boasts an integrated modulator and synthesizer to embed in all classes of laser printing and copying peripherals," explained Simon Dolan, SVP and GM of Oak Technology's Imaging Group.

Featuring the company's Arbitrary Waveform Synthesizer, the 80-pin LQFP device can generate any desired output waveform based on a single reference clock input. The integrated frequency synthesizer eliminates the need of generating the video clock in the OEM controller and, instead, generates the video pixel clock, programmable from 10MHz to 100MHz, from an independent arbitrary input reference clock from 10MHz to 66MHz.

The PWM and synthesizer are merged into a single module, with two separate arithmetic front-ends. The generation of the video pixel clock and the video output pulse are performed simultaneously to eliminate clock jitter and noise.

Additional features in the PM-1100 include a LVDS driver, complete margin controls for page printing, beam detect synchronization for precise scan line alignment, and look-up-tables to improve video output to the specific engine/toner system and/or user desired operating characteristics.
