Cisco Systems, in cooperation with the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), has launched the Cisco "IP Phone Services Competition," which will give Hong Kong students, IT specialists, and professionals the opportunity to help design IP telephony services with the networking company.

The competition is open to any interested person with prior knowledge of Web development, preferably XML language, who possesses some basic skills on programming logic and design. For the student category, Cisco expects to attract participants from universities and other tertiary institutions with an IT education background.

The judging panel includes officials from Cisco, Hong Kong IVE, the Institution of Electrical Engineers Hong Kong, and the Internet & Telecom Association of Hong Kong. Registration for the competition has started last September 11, and will go on through October 16. The final results will be officially announced on January 20 next year.

"IP Telephony technology is the future of voice communications and will drive major changes in the way organizations operate through the delivery of a vast array of new applications and services that offer unlimited possibilities," said Errol Chan, GM of Cisco Hong Kong. "This competition aims to tap into the resources of our community and give local students and professionals the chance to help build these exciting new services and raise public awareness of this emerging technology."
