Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. has partnered with AraLight Inc., a provider of optoelectronic interconnect solutions, to develop a modular switching evaluation platform for backplane applications. The reference design platform utilizes Vitesse's VSC3139, a 72-by-72 crosspoint switch, and the AraLight ARL-36 Series transceiver.

The modular switching evaluation platform will enable designers to address the demands for increased bandwidth for enterprise, metro, and core infrastructure networks. OEMs can use the switching systems for optical, SAN, and video applications. According to Vitesse, the platform will offer an end-to-end solution that will lower system costs by up to 30 percent and reduce the switching board footprint by 50 percent.

"Vitesse and AraLight have built a reference design that enables OEMs to easily incorporate optical links into a switching system without compromising signal integrity," said Gary McCormick, product line director from Vitesse.
