The ADE7752 three-phase electrical energy metering IC from Analog Devices Inc. features watt-hour output and is compatible with a wide range of three-phase grid configurations including direct connect and transformer operated, and 3- and 4-wire distribution.

Similar to other products in the ADE family, the ADE7752 achieves an accuracy <0.1 percent linearity error over a dynamic range of 500 to 1, and operates with a single 5V power supply. It has an accelerated lifespan of 60 years and can be used in three-phase commercial and industrial revenue meters or submeters, three-phase motors or generators, and industrial control and utility automation applications.

Single-chip, three-phase meter design is simplified with a built-in analog front end that is suited for direct interface with a current transformer. Average real power in the form of two selectable frequency pulses can directly register energy consumption on a stepper motor counter display.

The device detects improper wiring during meter installation via a negative power pin to provide an alert if one or more of the three phases has negative active power flow. Other features include no-load threshold and power supervisory functions.

The ADE7752 has a start-up current of 0.04 percent of basic current - ten times better than IEC standards - eliminating creep effect during a no-load condition, while power supervisory circuitry guarantees correct operation during power-up and power-down.

It is priced at $4.62 per unit in 1,000-piece quantities and is available now in a 24-lead SOIC package. An evaluation board, EVAL-ADE7752EB, is also available to facilitate performance and functionality verifications.
