EM Microelectronic SA has announced the release of the EM6680 single-chip CMOS, general-purpose microcontroller packaged in an 8-pin TSSOP, making it suitable for battery-powered toys and household appliances. The also integrates a 4-bit ADC and is half the size of similar SO-8-packaged devices.

"This (EM6680) is a unique, small general-purpose microcontroller consuming as low as 3.55A in standby mode and requiring no external components," said Nicolas Cuendet, EM Microelectronics marketing manager.

"In addition, we worked closely with several customers who suggested to include useful functions such as a 4-bit ADC for simple analog sensing and two high-drive outputs, making the EM6680 an ideal choice for cost-sensitive, high-volume applications requiring very low power consumption," Cuendet added.

Manufactured using an advanced low-power CMOS process, the EM6680 contains 3KB mask ROM, RAM, internal RC oscillator with metal optional selectable frequency between 32kHz and 800kHz, power-on reset, watchdog timer, 10-bit up/down counter/timer, prescaler, supply voltage level detector, serial interface, compare input, frequency output, and several clock functions. It operates from 1.2V to 3.6V and draws 45A in active mode.
