South Korea-based Samsung Electronics Corp. has collaborated with the Shanghai High Density Digital Technology Innovation Center (HDIC) to establish a digital TV research institute, aiming to explore China's DTV market.

The digital TV research institute is originally meant for the development of SD level networking access devices for cable-TV receiver and HD level access devices for TV receivers that support two-way communication. Samsung intends to gradually develop the institute into an R&D center for localized manufactured products.

Shanghai HDIC, a research center formed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Science Committee, and Shanghai Qi Pu Scientific Technology Ltd has developed China's first 2G HDTV function prototype system. Currently, the center is focusing on technology research, product development, system integration, and software development in the areas such as digital TV receiver broadcasting and consumer electronics.
