Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group and Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) have collaborated to develop a single-chip digital baseband solution for GSM basestations. This solution combines TI's DSPs with Siemens' SRAM IP onto a single device. The device performs all signal processing functions needed for a GSM carrier and is fully software backward compatible and downloadable.

In conjunction with TI's latest wireless infrastructure DSP technology, this solution fully supports features such as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), GERAN (GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network), NarrowBand-AMR (Adaptive Multirate), and WideBand-AMR.

The system is 100 percent software compatible with the former discrete solution, such that no changes are required, eliminating any software risk for system upgrades. The SoC digital baseband is manufactured in TI's low-power 0.18?m process technology.
