Startup to offer online Verilog training sessions

Mindbrook Inc., a startup, will begin online Verilog training programs next month and plans to offer design collaboration software in 1H next year.

The company was founded by two former employees of Zilog Inc., Cyril Rayan, Mindbrook's president and CEO, and Mike Hulme, the company's vice president of business development, a 30-year veteran of the semiconductor industry.

Mindbrook is only starting to look for venture capital funding. It currently employs nine full-time workers and two consultants, and will be officially launched next month when it offers its Verilog HDL course.

The five-day Verilog training courses will be offered live, priced at $499, Rayan said. "There are several courses in software available through e-learning, but not many companies offer Verilog training courses on e-learning," said Rayan. "Most Verilog courses cost more than $3,000, so our course is a great savings, especially during this economic downturn," said Rayan.

The courses are targeted at industry designers and at EE university students. "Most universities today, if they do offer HDL training, offer VHDL and not Verilog," said Rayan. "We believe our course will be very useful for those students wanting to learn Verilog."

The company is also currently developing design collaboration software, which it plans to move into beta testing at the end of this year. But the company declined to release details of the technology until the software's public release sometime in 1H of 2003.

"Mindbrook's goal is to enable effective design chain management," said Rayan. "We have heard that 85 to 90 percent of design projects fail to meet their schedules. EDA vendors are typically not focused on helping designers collaborate, plan, adopt, and manage new processes. Clearly, there is a need in the market for planning, workflow and knowledge management in the semiconductor industry."
