Agere ships multi-rate, multi-channel framer IC

The TSOT1610G framer from Agere Systems is claimed to be the industry's first multi-rate, multi-channel framer IC, supporting 16-channels of OC-3/STM-1, 16 channels of OC-12/STM-4, four channels of OC-48/STM-16, or a single OC-192/STM-64.

The IC can aggregate multiple data rate signals and perform several essential optical link traffic management functions simultaneously. Only one device is needed to multiplex 16 channels of OC-12, 16 channels of OC-3 or four channels of OC-48 into a single, 10Gbps stream, and vice-versa.

In addition to supporting traditional SONET/SDH overhead processing and termination functions, the TSOT1610G also features built-in bi-directional 10Gbps grooming switches, dual 4x2.5Gbps and dual 16x622Mbps backplane interfaces, a secondary SFI-4 optics interface, and flexible transport overhead (TOH) transparency.

The TOH function enables equipment vendors to build metro DWDM products that cost-effectively address the problem of fiber exhaust. In addition, the framer supports specific features required for the SDH market such as tandem connection monitoring, B1 and B3 block error monitoring, SS-bit provisioning and SS-bit overwriting (for SONET/SDH bridge applications).

Also included are two built-in hitless time-slot interchange (TSI) switches equipped with two sets of work and protect connection memory maps.
