Get2Chip: Sparking the front-end SoC design revolution

New waves of technology emerge in the EDA industry about every five to seven years that is heavily influenced by design technology advancements and challenges posed by process improvements. Since the 1980s, this has been true in almost all major EDA products such as place and route, extraction, physical verification, and functional verification. The only exception to the rule has been synthesis. Today, designers are still predominately using synthesis technology that has "lived twice" as long as it should have - about 15 years.

For years, designers have taken for granted this 15-year old technology which is probably among the best that has been created. There is no limit to advancements with synthesis technology. Get2Chip, for its part, has already made a strong wake-up call to the EDA synthesis market.

Designs of 10,000-gates were the norm when synthesis technology was first introduced and today, they are used widely. With the anticipated introduction of the 90nm process technology expected this year, designs of 100,000,000-gates will be made possible and with this, there is a clear need for new synthesis technology to address the complexity of this particular gate design.

If China takes on the role of leading the rest of the design world towards the use of next-generation design tools and methodologies by adopting these themselves, this will serve as a strategic move to address the challenges of designing 100 million-gate chips.

There has always been a focus on back-end convergence tools that are required for noise, signal integrity, and final incremental timing fixes because of the misconception that people should use back-end tools to fix bad front-end design structure. And so while most of the EDA industry is working on a master strategy to solve the shortcomings of the old logic synthesis technology, Get2Chip has been making fundamental breakthroughs to revolutionize front-end design.
