A handful of design-automation vendors, including Mentor Graphics Corp., Synopsys Inc., and Synplicity Inc., announced that they will support Altera Corp.'s newly-announced Cyclone FPGA device family. Additionally, Altera said its Quartus II software will include full design support for Cyclone.

Introduced this week, Altera's Cyclone FPGAs were described by the company as a low-cost FPGA platform. When volume production ramps up fully in 2004, unit prices will be as low as $4 for a part that rivals Xilinx Inc.'s Virtex 2 in capacity, Altera said.

On the EDA front, Mentor Graphics said its LeonardoSpectrum version 2002d and ModelSim version 5.6a software will support Cyclone; Synopsys said its FPGA Compiler II version 3.8 will support the family; and Synplicity said its Synplify version 7.2 will support the FPGAs.

Altera, meanwhile, is offering full Cyclone support with its Quartus II version 2.1 software. Designers can download the free Quartus II Web edition software from the Altera Web site.
