Asian electronics engineers are still looking for the proverbial light at the end of tunnel as a prolonged economic downturn continues to hound the global electronics industry. Last year's forecast of a 2002 recovery has long been forgotten, and companies are bracing themselves from the impact of the accounting scandals that have rocked Wall Street.

On the other hand, the continued exodus of multinational electronic manufacturers to mainland China as well as India and Taiwan's efforts to strengthen their respective IC design sectors have somewhat intensified the recruitment of electronic engineers in Asia.

Electronic Engineering Times - Asia looked at these issues from the point of view of an EE. The 2002 Salary & Opinion Survey, an online survey conducted among a pre-qualified audience of EEs and users of the Electronic Engineering Times - Asia, examines the views of Asian EEs regarding salaries, benefits, recruitment and job opportunities and job satisfaction, and how these issues have changed over the past year.

The 2002 survey received a total of 1,257 qualified responses from all over the region. On the average, respondents are about 32 years old, with about 7.2 years of work experience. China's electronics engineering community is well represented, with almost half of respondents coming from the mainland.

Efforts have also been exerted to get the views of electronics industry professionals - market analysts, human resources management practitioners and top corporate executives - on the current status of the industry and their outlook for the near future.

So what's the verdict? Read on and check whether you are on the right career path.
