Over the past ten years, driven in particular by its strengths in semiconductor design and wafer production, Taiwan has become a leading force in the worldwide electronics industry. In the mid-late 1990's, the Taiwan electronics industry grew steadily, and while total production and exports were down in 2001, this was in line with the worldwide semiconductor downturn, and is expected to turn around.

Taiwan electronics industry growth will be driven largely by the leading edge projects most Taiwan OEM companies today are working on - projects including optoelectronics, semiconductors, and SOCs. Taiwan companies are now driving rather than following industry trends, a far cry from the past when the primary role of Taiwan companies was to design the cost out of older products. Honed skill in cost reduction coupled with a newly found visionary talent makes a powerful combination that will foster growth and generate unique and valuable IP.

Our customers in Taiwan are some of the most sophisticated designers and visionaries in our customer base. Today these customers demand innovation and performance, compared to a cost conscious mentality of the past.

There is still a greater emphasis on price in Taiwan than in many other areas of the world, and these price concerns slow decision-making and still hold some Taiwan companies back. However, this old perspective is changing as new engineers fill the ranks of many Taiwan companies.

Taiwan will soon reach the same level as the US and Japan in terms of design sophistication and design team efficiency. This is due in large part to the focus that many EDA companies have placed on Taiwan.

When looking at Asian revenue potential and market significance, most EDA companies put Taiwan second behind Japan. Most EDA companies are well into their 3rd and 4th generation of products and projects with their Taiwan partners. This will continue over the next year and a half, especially if the economy continues to drive pricing pressures. And as fabless companies around the world continue to see the value Taiwan designers offer, the market will continue to grow in size and sophistication.

TransEDA has placed a great deal of emphasis on Taiwan over the past year. Our VN-Property DX dynamic property checker was developed with specific Taiwan customers in mind - customers whose design complexities required more than standard simulation to fully verify what functionality was complete. And TransEDA's system verification products such as Pentium bus functional models (BFMs) and cutting edge interface BFMs like HyperTransport, PCI Express and PCI-X have already found ready users in Taiwan.

This year TransEDA held its Asia Pacific sales meeting in Taipei &a first for the company. The decision to hold the meeting there was based on several factors, including great prospects in Taiwan and the dedication of our local distributor Avant Technology Inc.

TransEDA also expects to release the newest version of its property driven verification tools in Taiwan with several key customers. These customers will use the tools with their complex designs and cutting edge technologies.

Because EDA tools are sophisticated and complex products, if a company expects to sell these tools, they must invest in training, and in developing areas, this training is expected to be free or very low cost. With this in mind, TransEDA recently started a University program specifically to address the need for training in Taiwan. We will work with universities and training organizations to provide very low cost access to our products. In return, these organizations will offer free and low cost training for code coverage, HDL rule checking and property driven verification.

The Taiwan electronics industry will continue to grow through its own leading edge technologies and through partnerships with visionary companies around the globe. Like other forward-thinking EDA companies, TransEDA has recognized the growth potential of the Taiwan electronics market, and is putting resources in place to help foster the development of this soon to be giant in the electronics industry.
