The year 2000 saw the emergence of the mainland China market and increased competition in the global supply chain. As a result, Taiwan enterprises sought to reinforce their R&D skills through design collaboration.

To realize this, Taiwan-based W&Jsoft Inc. has developed a design collaboration wizard ? CoDesign ? which provides designers with the a cost-effective platform to discuss the concept, layout, prototype process with their co-workers in branches, manufacturing sites, assembly sites, and even with sales, marketing and management staff all over the world. I believe that through information sharing, CoDesign helps lower costs and shorten time-to-market.

W&Jsoft CoDesign combines the functions of web conferencing and viewer, which enables people from all over the world to conveniently communicate with each other using this wizard. Users only need to get online and, using a browser, they can enjoy text, file, VoIP, and even image sharing capabilities. Furthermore, CoDesign allows users to examine files in EDA, CAD, Microsoft Office, and PDF format, among others. It also offers practical functions such as application sharing, whiteboard, meeting minutes, action items, and so forth. Users need not install expensive EDA or CAD software to view the files. They can easily mark, rotate, pan, and zoom the pages. With these functions, CoDesign can easily facilitate real-time, convenient, and low-cost design communication on a global basis.

Take IC design, for example. The IC design process is very complicated. To produce a design, many divisions have to work together for a long time. At present, more and more IC design houses are considering potential design problems that might occur in the downstream foundry, assembly and test. In the future, there is a need for IC design houses to exchange ideas with global IC design service companies, foundries, assemblies, and so on; and those ideas need to be confirmed at their shortest time. Since designs can't be clearly explained over the phone and e-mail, professional designers have to meet in person; therefore, costs on fare and phone bills are considerably high.

By using W&Jsoft CoDesign, meetings between IC designers and their co-workers downstream can be reduced and become much easier. Using a browser, all they have to do is get online to the multi-functional online meeting room. Participants can freely discuss any specific design using web conferencing tools. Equipped with multiple format-supported viewer, this wizard allows users to discuss hundreds of files in the format of EDA and CAD without investing huge capital in design software.

In this era of global collaboration, W&Jsoft endeavors to facilitate real-time communication and enhance the knowledge sharing process in the design industry.
