ON Semi dc/dc converters feature low-battery detection

ON Semiconductor has introduced two new high frequency dc/dc converters with low-battery detectors for use in portable and wireless electronics including PDAs, digital cameras, and handheld instruments.

Configured for use in battery-operated handheld electronics with up to 250mA loading current, the NCP1410 and NCP1411 dc/dc converters deliver adjustable output voltages between 1.5V and 5.5V. A synchronous rectifier has also been integrated into each device to improve power system efficiency and eliminate the need for external Schottky diodes while reducing overall board space.

The devices also feature a switching frequency of up to 600kHz, allowing power system designers to use low profile inductor and output capacitors to further reduce board space and cost significantly, as well as achieve a lower output voltage ripple noise.

Both devices include logic-controlled shutdown and 1A cycle-by-cycle current limit features. They achieve a power efficiency of 92 percent and draw 9?A. The NCP1411 also includes a Ring-Killer feature to ensure quiet operation in discontinuous conduction mode and reduce EMI.

Offered in a 3-by-5mm Micro-8 package, the NCP1410 and NCP1411 are priced at 85 cents and $1, respectively, in 10,000-unit quantities.
