Sandburst Corp. has partnered with Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) to jointly develop and market packet switching solutions for MANs, data centers, and enterprise networks.

Under terms of the agreement, Sandburst and ADI will co-design a chipset for Ethernet, Internet Protocol, MPLS (multi-protocol label switching) and VLAN equipment. A major goal of the project is to ensure the interoperability of the companies' proprietary ICs to provide a seamless switch-fabric and forwarding-plane solution.

Sandburst's HIBEAM architecture and chipset allow OEMs to design and manufacture scalable network equipment providing a sustained 10Gbps per port packet switching. An enhanced version of the switch fabric, expected to begin sampling in Spring 2003, incorporates an ADI chip featuring the latter's advanced X-stream crosspoint switch technology. The new chipset is expected to result in lower operating and facilities costs for MAN and data center network operators through significant reductions in chip count, footprint, and power requirements.
