PMC-Sierra Inc. calls its PM5332 Spectra 1x2,488 one of the highest-density, multirate SONET/SDH framers available for single-channel OC-48/ STM-16 or four-port channelized OC-12/STM-4 interfaces.

The fully STS-1/AU-3 channelized framer integrates multirate clock-and-data recovery and synthesis, replacing up to five discrete devices, including a serdes.

The framer lets OEMs upgrade existing line cards to handle multiple transport operating modes while reducing system cost, complexity, board space and power, the company said. Target applications include multiservice provisioning platforms, add/drop multiplexers, and core routers and switches for metro and access networks.

A direct interface to SFF pluggable optical modules enables equipment to be field programmable for both OC-48/STM-16 and quad OC-12/STM-4 applications, so service providers can deploy one card in multiple applications and save on maintenance costs.

Given equipment costs, "service providers are wary of network equipment migration strategies that require a complete network overhaul," said Steve Perna, GM of PMC-Sierra's Service Provider Division.

The 3.5W, 1.8V CMOS device, packaged in a 31-by-31mm, 500-pin ?BGA, is priced at $350 in quantities of 10,000. A reference design and applications notes are available.
