LSI Logic Corp. has announced that it will produce the LSI53C320 - claimed to be the industry's first Ultra320 SCSI bus expander - for end-of-year availability, to complement the company's Fusion-MPT-based LSI53C1030 Ultra320 SCSI controller.

The LSI53C320 provides electrical isolation by regenerating, reshaping, and retransmitting SCSI bus signals and data between its A-side and B-side SCSI ports, thereby assuring signal integrity in storage enclosure and SAN cluster environments. The device is capable of self-calibration to adjust for variations in voltage, temperature, and silicon processing.

The bus expander also allows each SCSI bus segment to be physically disconnected from the others without disrupting SCSI transfers on other bus segments. This feature is aimed to facilitate system maintenance, hot-plugging, diagnostics, and upgrades while allowing continued availability of other bus segments.
