PMC-Sierra Inc.'s PM8356 QuadPHY FC Fibre Channel serdes is made for 1.0625Gbps or 2.125Gbps multiport transceiver systems in Fibre Channel switches.

Manufactured using a 0.18?m CMOS serdes technology, the four-channel serdes incorporates programmable pre-emphasis, receive equalization, and external passive components. The device is also claimed to provide users with increased signal integrity - up to 80 percent power savings with up to 70 percent board area reduction, and reduced overall system cost.

Other integrated capabilities include clock recovery, clock synthesis, byte alignment logic, and internal pattern generator/comparator for system test and diagnostics. For mission critical storage systems, the QuadPHY FC offers a fully redundant architecture to provide high-speed differential links.

The PM8356 is available in a 23-by-23mm footprint, thermally-enhanced 324-pin PBGA package and is priced at $44 in 1,000-unit quantities.
