Seiko Epson ships LCD controllers for next-gen portable apps

Designed for use in cellphones and PDAs equipped with cameras, the S1D13710 and S1D13712 LCD controllers from Seiko Epson Ltd. feature a built-in JPEG circuit, a camera interface, and a main LCD and substitute LCD interface for baseband CPUs.

The hardware-based controllers support VGA resolution cameras and feature a built-in PLL clock circuit that converts an external 32.768kHz to between 40MHz to 60MHz. It has a core voltage of 1.8V and 3V-tolerant I/Os.

The S1D13710 has 224KB of VRAM and displays up to 650,000 colors, while the S1D13712 has 320KB and displays up to 16 million colors. Both also feature the company's SwivelView function, picture-in-picture plus, and overlay capability.

The devices are available in a 160-pin FCBGA package, with the S1D13712 device also available in a 160-pin PFBGA casing.
