Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd has announced the construction of a new TFT-LCD module assembly plant at the Suzhou Industrial Park in China's Jiangsu Province. The new module line will cover 100,000 sq. meters of a 545,500-square meter site acquired for future facility expansions. The plant is scheduled to begin operations in Q3 of 2003.

The Samsung Suzhou facility will manufacture 14.1-inch and 15-inch TFT-LCDs for notebook PCs, as well as 15-, 17- and 19-inch models for desktop monitors. Initial monthly output is targeted to be about 200,000 units, which will be supplied domestically. The local assembly operation is expected to enable Samsung to be more responsive to customer requirements, improve customer service and shorten delivery intervals.

"China is the most attractive market for the IT industry in terms of growth potential for the 21st century," said Mr. Yoon-Woo Lee, president and CEO of Samsung Electronics Device Solution Network. "We intend to continue bolstering the competitiveness of our semiconductor and TFT-LCD businesses and expand our China-based production, sales, and R&D operations."

Additionally, Samsung's Device Solution Network business unit is pursuing plans to establish an R&D center in China next year. A cooperative program with leading Chinese universities will be on the drawing board to discover young talent and build a network of scientists and engineers.
