Micrel Semiconductor Inc.'s MIC281 IttyBitty thermal sensor IC senses and reports the temperature of an off-chip embedded thermal diode or commodity transistor via an I2C/SMBus-compatible two-wire serial bus and is suitable for use with CPUs and FPGAs.

Available in a 6-pin SOT23 package, the device measures remote temperatures with an 8-bit resolution and 130C accuracy from 600C to 1000C. It functions from a 3V to 3.6V power supply range and draws 3mA when active and 55A during shutdown mode.

It also features a failsafe response to diode faults and has an SMBus timeout function to prevent bus lock-up.

The MIC281 is priced at 88 cents each in 1,000-piece quantities.
