Cypress RFIC connects 7 HIDs up to 10m

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. has announced that is sampling its CY694X series of WirelessUSB devices that functions at 2.4GHz and can connect as many as seven human-interface devices (HIDs) - including PC mice, keyboards, and gaming consoles - that are 10m apart.

The devices operate using the frequency hopping scheme and exhibit a latency <8ms with four concurrent devices connected, making it suitable for use in gaming environments.

"Current wireless HID technology has serious limitations, while Bluetooth is overkill for these applications," claimed Cathal Phelan, VP of Cypress's Personal Communications Division. "Cypress's WirelessUSB products satisfy the three critical requirements for this market: power, price, and latency."

"The current 27MHz technology for the HID markets offers limited capabilities for mice and keyboards and does not address the gaming market at all," said Dale Ford, director of market intelligence services for iSuppli.

"That technology can only support two connected devices at a time, and it is slow and restrictive compared to solutions that offer more active nodes, lower latency and spread spectrum technology. The products that offer these features should prove compelling to HID designers and expand the marketplace for wireless HID devices," Ford added.

The CY694X devices operate from a 2.7V to 3.6V supply over the 0C to 70C temperature range. They have a transmit power of up to 4dBm, receiver sensitivity of -78dBm, and support data rates of up to 217.6Kbps. They support 64-bit or 128-bit encryption and feature advanced power management capabilities.
