ATI Technologies Inc. has introduced the IMAGEON 3200 multimedia co-processor that integrates a 2D graphics engine, MPEG/JPEG decoder, a set of peripheral I/O functions, and is targeted at handheld electronics such as PDAs and the next-generation of data-enabled mobile phones.

The graphics engine supports all 2D acceleration functions to enable fast animation and fast drawing to the screen. It also includes advanced features such as alpha blending, object rotation, and Gouraud shading to improve the visual quality.

The MPEG/JPEG decoder is claimed to free up more than 50 percent of MIPS power from the main CPU to enable the support for higher resolutions at higher frame rates with no visual artifacts.

The co-processor also has enough embedded SRAM to support double buffering of images for higher quality graphics and video on standard PDA display resolutions. It also includes interfaces that support USB OTG, SD and SDIO cards, and a video capture port.
