VCSEL driver meets SFP module requirements

Suitable for SFP/SFF-8472 short-wave optical modules, the MAX3740 is touted by Maxim integrated Products to be the first multirate VCSEL driver to meet all requirements for SFP modules with SFF-8472 Digital Diagnostics. The 3.3V device operates from 1Gbps to 3.2Gbps and can be used in GbE, Fibre Channel, and OC-48 short-reach applications.

Manufactured using the company's second-generation SiGe process, the 4-by-4mm, 24-pin QFN device has an edge-speed transition time of 65ps and generates 12ps deterministic jitter and 1.3ps random jitter.

It has a selectable peaking current feature, making it easy to interface with all VCSELs. Also featured are bias and power monitor outputs, a transmit disable feature, and a transmit fault output.

The MAX3740 has a programmable bias current range of 1mA to 15mA and a programmable modulation current range of 2mA to 15mA. The VCSEL driver can be used in common cathode as well as differential configurations. It is screened for operation over -40C to 85C temperature range.
