The SP8126 photodetector IC from Sipex Corp. produces an output voltage relative to the power of the laser light and switches at speeds of 300V/?s with a settling time of 7ns, allowing DVD write speeds of up to 8x while protecting the laser from overstress.

Available in a 3.5-by-3mm, 8-pin clear COB package, the device allows the users to switch from the DVD and CD modes of operation and provides separate gain settings for each mode. It provides a bandwidth of 100MHz and a differential output of 2V. The IC also exhibits a light sensitivity of 3kV/W and PSRR of 50dB.

The SP8126 is available now and is priced at $1.05 in 100,000 piece quantities.
