TI embedded processor combines DSP, RISC cores

Texas Instruments Inc. has unveiled the OMAP5910 dual-core embedded processor that combines the best features of DSP and RISC processors, and is targeted at multimedia-enhanced applications such as digital media, biometrics, location-based services, and telematics.

The processor utilizes the real-time processing capabilities and low-power consumption of the company's TMS320C55x DSP core, and the flexibility and scalability of an ARM925 microprocessor. The RISC processor is suited to orchestrating command and control, while the DSP handles computation-intensive signal processing tasks.

The OMAP5910 also includes on-chip peripherals such as 192KB of RAM, USB 1.1 host and client, MMC/SD card interface, multichannel buffered serial ports, real-time clock, GPIO and UARTs, LCD interface, SPI, 5wire, and I?S interfaces.
