Atmel smart card reader ICs address USB systems

Atmel Corp. says that its smart-card reader ICs based on the C51 microcontroller can address any application that uses serial, USB, or PC Card smart-card readers. The AT8xC5122 and AT83C5123, available in Flash, RAM, or ROM versions, target serial smart-card readers for mobile phones, PDAs, and energy meters.

Both offer flexibility for optimizing USB smart-card keyboards and PClink smart-card readers. The AT83C25 provides solutions for PC Card readers, while the AT83C24 is billed as a cost-effective level-shifter solution for STBs and POS equipment.

In all four devices, a dc/dc converter with 75 to 98 percent efficiency powers the target card with the appropriate voltage (5V, 3V, or 1.8 V) regardless of the voltage source. An ISO7816 UART is also integrated on all but the AT83C24 for data transfer to the card, and an on-chip power management unit handles wake-up, reset/power-fail and short-circuit detection. Card I/Os are designed to offer 4kV ESD protection.

In addition to the four card reader ICs, Atmel is offering ready-to-use hardware/software solutions that are pre-certified for EMV 2000, PC/SC, ISO7816, and WHQL standards.

"Embedded in the final application, Atmel ICs offer makers of keyboards, STBs, PDAs, EFT-POS terminals, mobile phones, and energy meters (the ability) to integrate a universal smart-card reader interface quickly and easily," said Manish Vadher, marketing director for C51 microcontrollers.

Small-footprint, low-profile packages such as SSOP24, PLCC28, VQFP32, PLCC52, VQFP64, and PLCC68 are available in industrial and commercial temperature ranges.

The AT8xC5121, available now, is priced at $4 for the flash version and $2.50 for the ROM version in 10,000-piece quantities.
