TI dc/dc converter feature 95 percent efficiency

Targeted at battery-powered handheld applications, the TPS61107 synchronous step-up dc/dc converter from Texas Instruments Inc. features an LDO linear regulator that is claimed by the company to extend battery life significantly.

A member of the company's TPS611x family of power management ICs, the TPS61107 uses PWM switching, which results to a conversion efficiency of up to 95 percent, prolonging the life of single- and dual-cell alkaline, NiCd, and NiMH batteries.

The converter operates from a 0.8V to 3.3V supply and generates two stable output voltages, 3.3V with the boost converter stage and 1.8V with the LDO stage. It has a quiescent current of 65?A and features a power-save mode to improve efficiency at low output power.

A low-EMI is also implemented in the device to lower the radiated electromagnetic energy when the converter enters the discontinuous conduction mode.

The TPS61107 is available in a 20-pin TSSOP or in a 24-pin QFN and is priced at $1.75 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
