A power-scaling library in Texas Instruments Inc.'s DSP starter kit (DSK) for the TMS320C55x allows users to visualize the power and current consumed by DSP tasks. The kit also includes Code Composer Studio tools and a software-based power analyzer that, paired with the library, allows engineers to evaluate system power consumption.

A board equipped with TI's C5510 DSP links via USB to a host PC running Windows 98, 2000, or XP. Code Composer Studio 2.1 tools monitor the DSK activity and provide a Tektronix Oscilloscope Window screen for the current probing. The DSK tracks current consumption over time, showing the current while a DSP is doing a particular job, enabling users to visualize "hot spots" in their code, said product-marketing manager Lori Vidra.

The DSK is available today for $395 through TI distributors, the TI e-Store and directly from co-developer Spectrum Digital. Registered Code Composer Studio v2.12 users can get it free.
