The SP6648 step-up dc/dc converter from Sipex Corp. draws a quiescent current of 12?A, while delivering an output of up to 400mA, making it suitable for powering dual cell alkaline or Li-ion-based battery applications such as digital cameras. PDAs, and MP3 players.

The combination of high output power and low quiescent current is accomplished by automatically switching from PWM to PFM under light load conditions. The IC also features programmable peak current, low battery detect, and power shutdown control.

"Extending the life of batteries makes our customers' products more competitive and attractive in the consumer marketplace", said Kevin Plouse, SVP of Business Development. "Sipex's power management team is focused on delivering optimized solutions that target fast growing applications and take advantage of our expertise in controlling and optimizing power sources."

Available in a 10-pin MSOP, the Sp6648 operates from an input of 0.95V to 4.5V and has a 3.3V fixed and 2.5V to 5V adjustable outputs. It has an internal synchronous rectifier that allows the IC to achieve an efficiency of 94 percent. Rated operating temperature range is -40C to 85C.

The SP6648 is available now and is priced at 99 cents in 100,000 piece quantities.
