Toshiba Bluetooth LSI occupies smaller board area

Toshiba Corp. has announced the development of a Bluetooth LSI that integrates an RF, baseband, and mask ROM circuits in a 113-pin FPLGA package that measures 7-by-7-by-0.8mm.

Fully conforming to the Bluetooth v1.1 specification, the TC35654 takes up about 65 percent lesser space on a PCB compared to discrete RF, baseband, and mask ROM circuit ICs. The built-in mask ROM replaces an external NOR Flash memory and installs LMP/HCI software for Bluetooth operation.

Also built-in the LSI is an ARM7TDMI processor core, buffer RAM, and a radio signal strength indicator. It has interfaces for add-on ROM, external NOR Flash memory, and E2PROM, as well as UART and PCM digital audio interfaces.

The TC35654 is manufactured using a 0.185m CMOS process and will be sampling on February 2003 for about $7.29 each.
