CommScope Inc., a designer and manufacturer of broadband communication cables, has announced its plan to reduce its work force by about 6 to 7 percent in response to the ongoing economic slowdown. As of September 2002, the company has about 2,800 employees worldwide.

The layoffs will primarily occur at CommScope's Claremont and Newton, North Carolina plants and will impact both hourly and salaried personnel. The layoffs are expected to be implemented in January 2003.

"Due to the uncertain business environment, we had used reduced work schedules and rotating layoffs to balance our workforce with customer demand during most of 2002," said president and COO, Brian Garrett. "However, given the ongoing challenging business conditions, we believe that this permanent work force reduction is necessary."
