Texas Instruments Inc. has announced the release of the TMS320DM642 600MHz digital media processor that features full software programmability to allow customers to develop video products with the latest algorithms and allow remote upgrades as standards evolve and new software technologies are developed.

Code-compatible with the company's C64x generation of DSPs, the processor targets video over IP, video-on-demand, multichannel digital video recording applications, and high quality video encoding and decoding solutions.

The device supports real-time ISO MPEG2 encoding and decoding software, as well as MPEG 4, H.26L, H.263, AC-3, AAC, and MP-3 algorithms. It also offers on-chip high-definition-capable video ports, glueless Ethernet, multichannel audio, and a 66MHz PCI interface.

At 600MHz, the DM642 is capable of processing up to four simultaneous MPEG2 video decodes with 720x480 resolution, at 30fps. The DM642 is also capable of full Main-Profile-at-Main-Level (MP@ML) MPEG-2 video encoding in real time.
