PMC-Sierra Inc. has introduced the PM5364 TUPP 2488 tributary unit pointer processor and cross-connect for OC-48 SONET and STM-16 SDH networks. The device performs grooming and cross-connecting for widely deployed private lines Ethernet, Frame Relay, and voice services in MANs.

This capability allows access networks to reduce carrier costs by replacing high-power, multi-chassis, digital cross-connects in the network core with low-cost service card solutions in access networks. The service cards can be deployed into existing add/drop muxes (ADMs), multiservice provisioning platforms (MSPPs), and STS-1/AU-4 optical cross-connects.

Available in a 35mm-by-35mm, 580-pin BGA package, the TUPP 2488 integrates up to 13 devices needed by customer premises, metro access ADMs, and MSPPs. It can provide complete pointer processing, cross-connecting and line card fan-in for OC-3/STM-1 and OC-12/STM-4 transport solutions.

Aside from pointer processing and a 2.6Gbps VT/TU cross-connect, the OC-48/STM-16 device integrates payload alignment, performance monitoring, and 622Mbps and 2.5Gbps serial I/O technology. For solutions requiring scalability beyond 2.5Gb, the TUPP 2488 connects to the company's NSE-20G or NSE-8G cross-connects for 20Gb and 7.5Gb capacities, respectively.
