The Ministry of Science and Technology of China has selected UTStarcom Inc. to conduct research on IP softswitch technology. This effort is aimed at bringing China closer to its goal of promoting a world-recognized softswitch standard that provides cost efficiencies by supporting all-IP communications over both wireline and wireless networks.

The research project includes in-depth technical evaluations and comparisons of a variety of new and existing softswitch technologies.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, it chose UTStarcom to conduct the softswitch research because the company's IP-based mSwitch supports both multimedia and mobile functions, and because the switch's application orientation is able to help operators quickly deploy new services.

The softswitch research project is part of China's National High Technology Research and Development Program, which is managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The program was launched in March 1996 with the aim of enhancing China's international competitiveness and improving its overall R&D capabilities in high technology.
