According to Industrial Economic & Knowledge Center (IEKC), the production of electronic components for mobile phones in Taiwan is estimated to reach a production value of NT$57.80 billion ($1.65 billion at $1:NT$34.88) this year, an increase of 32.70 percent from 2001.

In 2003, IEKC forecasts demand growth of about 20 percent in this industry. Ling-Jung Chen, research manager, said the increase in demand will come from OEM and ODM orders for mobile phone assembly.

Meanwhile, there are some major concerns mobile phone component companies aim to address: expand the range of their IC designs, be able to solve patent problems for blue and white LEDs, as well as upgrade the reliability of their products' LCD displays.

Components such as connectors, PCBs, switches and motors are expected to account for about 40 percent of the local market, followed by active components with 21 percent and passive components with 13 percent share. Function components including magnetic heads, power supplies, batteries, sensors and audio parts are anticipated to hold 11 percent of the market.
