Designed for portable battery-powered devices, such as PDAs, cellphones, and other Bluetooth-enabled equipment, the TPS6205x family of step-down dc/dc converters from Texas Instruments is claimed to provide up to 95 percent power conversion efficiency from an input of 2.7V to 10V.

The devices provide an output between 0.7V to 6V, 800mA and have a quiescent current of 12?A to enable longer standby times for devices that use one- to two-cell Li-ion or two- to six-cell NiMh, NiCd, or Alkaline batteries.

Available in 10-pin MSOPs, the converters come with integrated FETs to reduce both board space and system cost. They typically operate at 850kHz and can be synchronized to external clock frequencies from 600kHz to 1.2MHz. In shutdown mode, the current consumption is reduced to <2?A.

The TPS6205x converters feature overtemperature and overcurrent protection, power good and low battery detection features, and are rated for operation over the -40C to 85C temperature range.
