The market for wireless technologies is still vibrant as new standards and technologies are getting established and are creating a growing market place. Even though the expectation of the previous years in terms of the overall growth rate has been reduced, the newly established markets based on new standards like Bluetooth and WLAN are showing substantial growth rates.

According to all major market studies, the Bluetooth market is tripling this year from around 11 million units in 2001 to around 35 million units. WiFi, the 802.11b WLAN standard, will still grow from 15 million units to around 26 million units shipped last year, which still accounts for a 73 percent growth rate. Looking into this year we should expect another boost in the Bluetooth segment with a forecast of more than 130 million units. The major share of 40 percent to 50 percent will come from the mobile phone sector. Other product areas are split between headset and cable replacement in the notebook and PDA market. For the latter, the main impact will be through add-on accessories like USB-dongle or CF/PCMCIA cards.

This growing trend in the digital wireless technology will also require a higher need of expertise in RF design, software protocol, and development competencies and capabilities in Asia. Since the world has changed from analog to digital wireless standards, the protocol competence and the RF competence will be equally important for the new product development. For most manufacturers this requires to team up with state-of-the-art R&D centers for wireless technologies to develop competitive solution for their new wireless-enabled products.

It would be an advantage to have such expertise in the region like GigaWaveTech, which will allow a closer and faster communication with the manufacturer during the development phase. This will reduce the time-to-market for a competitive wireless solution.

This year will also see a move into the development of embedded wireless solution for Bluetooth and WiFi. The manufacturers of computer and consumer products have to integrate the wireless interfaces to meet the size and cost targets expected in the market. This requires integration of the RF technology and the incorporation of the protocol stack into the existing OSs. In depth knowledge is required to develop optimized products and pass the certification and approval bodies such as BQB, FCC, and ETSI.

Wireless design houses like GigaWaveTech will play a crucial role in enabling the traditional manufacturers in Asia of computer, telecommunication, and consumer products toward the wireless world of tomorrow.
