Lithium Technology Corp. (LTC) has announced the development of a second prototype battery in preparation for testing in a 42V automotive application. The prototype has a flat form-factor 27Ah building-block cell to allow the battery to deliver a 200A current pulse with minimal heat generation.

Automobile manufacturers are eyeing 42V batteries to replace 12V devices and promise better fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and an expanded array of on-board electronics to be implemented once 42V systems are adopted.

"Our 42V prototypes represent the culmination of several years' worth of advanced technology and product development work in unique large format flat cell designs and large battery assemblies," said Dr. Franz Kruger, LTC President and COO.

The company previously released its first 42V prototype battery in September 2002 as part of the Astor program and is still undergoing testing in Europe. LTC's batteries are marketed under the GAIA brand.
