RF Micro Devices Inc. has announced that it has begun deployment of its 802.11a WLAN chipsets, which is expected to ramp-up in the March quarter and accelerate throughout the year.

According to RF Micro, the higher data rates supported by 802.11a products and the increased channel capacity of 5GHz provide a cost-effective and efficient medium to accommodate high bandwidth applications, such as multimedia for large numbers of users. Additionally, the deployment of 5GHz 802.11a WLAN technology is expected to enable the future implementation of interoperable dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.

"The technologies developed by Resonext, our recently acquired company, will have a major, strategic importance for RF Micro as new standards and requirements emerge. We intend to leverage our combined strengths as customer requirements evolve to higher bandwidth 802.11a and multimode a/b/g combination products," said Jerry Neal, RF Micro's EVP of marketing and strategic development.
