Ericsson and Hutchison Whampoa Ltd have signed an agreement that will allow the Hong Kong telecommunications company to use Ericsson's Video Gateway System in its 3G wireless networks.

Ericsson's gateway is designed to support video telephony between personal computers and 3G mobile videophones being deployed by Hutchison. The company's 3G services, which are known by the brand name "3," are licensed in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Israel, Sweden, and the U.K.

Ericsson and Hutchison have been working together on the Video Gateway System and are currently testing it in Italy, U.K., and Hong Kong.

"With our '3' videophones and the new Video Gateway System, our clients will be able to make video calls all over the world, even in countries without 3G services," said Hutchison's group managing director Canning Fok.

The new 3G system is based on a technique that takes data from the IP platform used to provide fixed-line PC access and converts it to the 3GPP standard used in 3G mobile multimedia and communications networks. The partners said the standards-based system enables the use of advanced voice and video codecs, telephony services, user account management facilities, and built-in quality-of-service utilities.
