STMicroelectronics and SpaceBridge Semiconductor Corp. have entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in which the two companies will develop a family of integrated broadband wireless modem chips and low-cost integrated two-way STB solutions targeted to provide true broadband wireless access, HDTV, and Interactive TV receiver capability at speeds up to 155Mbps.

These chips will be manufactured by ST and marketed by both SpaceBridge and ST. The product family will include both RF and digital components, a comprehensive software suite (AirOETM), MAC and Phy layer, AirOETM components, terminal and network management modules. The jointly developed technology is expected to allow providers to rapidly deploy high capacity broadband STB solutions, enabling broadband services such as Internet, voice, data and streaming video for business, home office, and high-end residential users.

"Combining SpaceBridge's and ST's complementary expertise in set-top box and two-way satellite applications we will be able to provide to the market low-cost applications for two-way satellite," said Christos Lagomichos, VP of ST's STB Division. "This partnership perfectly complements ST's alliance with Alenia Spazio."
