Tyco connectors eye high-current apps

Tyco Electronics' AMP Power Series 75 connectors carry as much as 75A in a single-pole housing when connected to a 6AWG wire. They are rated for 600Vdc/ac.

The new series is available in two housing configurations: a standard, non-locking version and a locking version. The modular housings can be interlocked horizontally and vertically with a retaining pin to create stacked versions.

To reduce inventory expenses, the AMP power connectors use a genderless mating design that allows a mated pair to be assembled with two identical mating halves, so only one style of connector housing and contact need to be purchased.

The connectors are rated for up to 10,000 mating cycles and offer high vibration resistance, according to the company. The parts can be used in demanding applications such as electric vehicles, material-handling equipment, industrial trucks/forklifts, power supplies, office furniture, and communications equipment.

Offered in an impact-resistant, UL 94V-0 polycarbonate housing in numerous colors, the connectors allow multipole configurations with visual color coding to match wires. Silver-plated copper contacts offer low resistance and superior conductivity, Tyco said.

The contacts feature a self-cleaning design that minimizes arcing by scraping corrosion from the mating surfaces after each mating cycle.

Cold-headed contacts are available on tape or in loose pieces. Automated termination machines can be used to install the on-tape contacts to the wire.

The AMP power connectors accept 6AWG to 12AWG wire.

Housings, cold-headed contacts and stamped and formed contacts are priced at 44 cents, 33 cents, and 25 cents, respectively, in lots of 10,000.
