The AK4538 single-chip codec from Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co. Ltd integrates PLL, audio amplifiers, 16-bot monaural ADC, stereo DAC, and microphone circuits into a 52-pin QFN package, and is targeted at low-power portable device applications.

The integrated DAC and ADC support 16-bit sampling rates from 8kHz to 48kHz. The variable sample rates are claimed by the company to increase memory efficiency. The mono ADC has an 83dB SNR and also contains an automatic level control and microphone pre-amplifier.

For audio playback, a stereo DAC and digital attenuator are used in conjunction with the built-in headphone and speaker amplifiers. The headphone amplifier delivers up to 15mW of power at 8-ohm to 32-ohm loads, while the monospeaker amplifier delivers up to 150mW of power. The DAC exhibits an SNR of 95dB.

The AK4538 has a selectable mono and stereo analog inputs for mixing a variety of external analog signals from cellphone controllers, MP3 decoders, and external sources. This analog mixing allows designers to create a unified audio system for combo cellphone/PDA devices.

The PLL provides internal audio clock generation, while a two-input selector for switching between internal and external microphone sources is also included.

The AK4538 operates from a single 2.4V to 3.6V power supply. It features both4-wire and I?C interfaces, and is capable of operating as a system master or slave.
